Tools & Accessories

Chapter 8 — Complete accessories checklist, installation tools, and consumables for lightning protection system deployment

A successful lightning protection system installation depends not only on the correct selection of primary protection components but also on having the complete set of installation accessories, consumables, and tools available on-site. Missing a single accessory — such as the correct compression lug size, the anti-oxidant compound for copper-aluminum connections, or the torque wrench for verifying bolt torque — can compromise the quality and reliability of the completed installation. This chapter provides a comprehensive accessories checklist, organized by category, to ensure that all necessary items are procured and available before installation begins.

8.1 Complete Accessories Checklist

The accessories checklist image below presents all required installation accessories in a single organized reference, with item names and indicative quantities for a typical small-to-medium communication site installation. Quantities should be adjusted based on the specific site requirements determined during the design phase.

8.2 Fasteners and Connectors

All fasteners used in lightning protection installations must be made from corrosion-resistant materials to ensure long-term reliability. Stainless steel (A2 or A4 grade) is the preferred material for bolts, nuts, and washers used in outdoor or high-humidity environments. The table below specifies the fastener requirements for different connection types in a typical installation.

Connection TypeFastener SpecificationTorque RequirementQuantity (Typical Site)
MEB to wall bracketM8 × 40 mm SS hex bolt + spring washer + flat washer15–20 Nm4–8 sets
Bonding conductor to MEBM6 × 20 mm SS hex bolt + spring washer + flat washer8–12 Nm10–20 sets
Earth rod clampM8 SS hex bolt + nut (included with clamp)15–20 Nm4–8 sets

Rack bonding strapM6 × 20 mm SS hex bolt + spring washer + flat washer8–12 Nm4–8 sets per rack

8.3 Sealing and Weatherproofing Materials

All outdoor connections in the lightning protection system must be properly weatherproofed to prevent moisture ingress, which is the primary cause of corrosion-related protection degradation. The combination of mastic sealing tape (applied first) and self-amalgamating tape (applied over the mastic) provides a durable, moisture-proof seal for all outdoor connections including earth rod clamps, bonding conductor terminations, and coax grounding kit connections.

MaterialApplication MethodCoverageQuantity (Typical Site)
Mastic sealing tape (50 mm wide)Wrap with 50% overlap, 2 layers minimumFills gaps and voids around connection1–2 rolls (10 m each)

8.4 Labeling and Documentation

Proper labeling of all lightning protection components is required by IEC 62305-3 and is essential for safe and efficient maintenance. All earth connections must be labeled to prevent accidental disconnection, and all SPDs must be labeled with their type, rating, and installation date. The table below specifies the labeling requirements for a complete installation.

Label TypeText / ContentMaterialLocation
