Chapter 9 — Five interactive real-time calculators for lightning protection system design
The following interactive calculators provide real-time computation support for the most critical design parameters in communication system lightning protection. Each calculator implements the relevant IEC standard formulas and provides immediate visual feedback as you adjust the input parameters. These tools are intended to support the design process and should be used in conjunction with the full design methodology described in Chapter 2.
Calculator 1: Earth Resistance Estimator
Estimates the earth resistance of a vertical rod electrode using the Dwight formula (IEC 62305-3). Adjust soil resistivity, rod length, and rod diameter to see the real-time result and compliance status.
Calculator 2: SPD Protection Voltage & Coordination Check
Checks whether the selected SPD protection voltage (Up) is compatible with the equipment's impulse withstand voltage (Uw) and verifies the coordination margin between Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 SPDs.
Calculator 3: Annual Lightning Strike Frequency (IEC 62305-2)
Calculates the annual number of dangerous lightning events (Nd) for a structure based on IEC 62305-2. Compares Nd against the tolerable risk threshold to determine whether lightning protection is required.
Calculator 4: Bonding Conductor Size Selector
Determines the minimum cross-sectional area for bonding conductors based on the expected partial lightning current, conductor material, and connection type per IEC 62305-4 Table B.1.
Calculator 5: SPD Lead Inductance & Residual Voltage
Calculates the additional voltage drop (ΔU) across the SPD connection leads due to inductance during a surge event. This "lead inductance voltage" adds to the SPD's rated Up and can significantly increase the actual protection voltage seen by the equipment.
